Windows NT - Restoring a file using NT backup

this procedure will tell you how to restore a file from your backup media, test the file and move it to it's original location
requirements
before using this procedure you will need
- The tape that you want to restore the file from
- The folder that the file was stored in
- A folder that you will temporarily restore the file into
procedure

Finding the file
- If the tape that you want to use for this procedure is already in the drive and the last thing that happened to the backup software was a backup to this tape then the catalog for this tape will already be loaded.
- Otherwise, you will need to Load the catalog for this tape
- If you have not opened the software already, click on the [Start] button then 'Administrative Tools (Common)' then 'Backup'
- Select 'Tapes' from the 'Window' menu
- Use the [+] and [-] boxes to expand the folder structure and find the folder that contains the file that you want to restore
- Tick the checkbox next to the file that you want to restore

Restoring the file
- Select 'Restore...' from the 'Operations' menu to open the 'Restore Information' form.
- Click on the [...] button next to the 'Alternate Path' textbox and select a folder that you want the restored file to be placed into.
- Tick the 'Verify After Restore' checkbox.
- In the 'Restoring a file' section tick the 'Restore file permissions' checkbox.
- In the 'Log information' section select the 'Full detail' option and make a note of the folder and name for the backup log file.
- Click on the [OK] button to start the restore process.
- Wait while the file is found on the tape and restored into the folder that you selected.

Testing the file
- Go to your computer and open the file.
- Note: It is possible that there may be problems or errors when opening the file due to it's links with other files because it is not yet in it's original location.
- As far as possible establish whether this copy of the file is ok.

Moving the file to it's original location
- Note: Don’t do this section of the procedure if you are doing a backup test. Only do this section of the procedure if you are restoring a file to it’s original location.
- If you are going to overwrite a corrupt version of the file that is still on your server...
- Zip up the corrupt version of the file and store it in a folder that you use for this purpose.
- Delete the unzipped corrupt version of the file from your server.
- Cut and paste the restored file from the folder that you restored it to into it's original location.
- Go to your computer and test that the file opens correctly.
