Windows 2003 - Restoring a file using backup
description
this procedure will tell you how to restore a file from your backup media, test the file and move it to it's original location
requirements
before using this procedure you will need
- The tape that you want to restore the file from
- The folder that the file was stored in
- A folder that you will temporarily restore the file into
procedure

Finding the file
- Click on the [Start] button then 'Programs', 'Accessories', 'System Tools' and finally 'Backup'
- Go to the 'Restore and Manage Media' page
- Click on the [+] symbol to the left of the name of your tape drive display a list of tapes
- Click on the [+] symbol to the left of the tape that you are going to restore from. if you are not sure which tape this is then try each one until you find the one with the correct date in the 'created' column
- Click on the [+] symbols next to the drives and folders that are stored on the tape and tick the box(es) next to the file(s) that you want to restore.

Restoring the file
- Select 'single folder' from the 'Restore files to:' list at the bottom left of the form.
- Click on the [Browse...] button and select the folder that you have created to temporarily store the file(s) that you are restoring.
- Click on the [Start Restore] button to open the 'confirm restore' window
- Click on the [OK] button to restore the file(s) that you have selected into the temporary folder.

Testing the file
- Go to your computer and open the file.
- Note: It is possible that there may be problems or errors when opening the file due to it's links with other files because it is not yet in it's original location.
- As far as possible establish whether this copy of the file is ok.

Moving the file to it's original location
- Note: Don’t do this section of the procedure if you are doing a backup test. Only do this section of the procedure if you are restoring a file to it’s original location.
- If you are going to overwrite a corrupt version of the file that is still on your server...
- Zip up the corrupt version of the file and store it in a folder that you use for this purpose.
- Delete the unzipped corrupt version of the file from your server.
- Cut and paste the restored file from the folder that you restored it to into it's original location.
- Go to your computer and test that the file opens correctly.
